Come and see what we mean when we say the best of the West in right here in the East at Pinegrove. Cattle driving at Pinegrove will give you a taste of what it was like. Guests can enjoy watching the cattle drive from many locations or, if experienced riders, they may participate. Our herd is made up of a variety of breeds including White Face, Herefords, Jerseys, and Black Angus. Most of our cattle have had experience with people; however caution should always be used when approaching them.

There is a $50.00 fee per person, per drive. Each drive takes approximately one and a half hours. As safety always comes first, participants must have advanced rider status. Our drovers will assess your ability before each drive. You must be able to control your horse in walk, trot and cantor as well as demonstrate the ability to back your horse up and treat your horse with respect. If in our opinion you do not qualify, your money will be refunded.

History of the Cattle Drive

Cattle driving originated in America when the need for beef to feed our expanding country grew so great that cattle had to be brought in from the Western states. Wild cattle would be rounded up from great expanses of open range and then collected into huge herds. Once rounded up, the drive to the East or nearest railroad (2000 miles) would begin. It could take up to a month to reach the stockyard. Driving the herd was slow, always looking for grass pastures and keeping an eye out for Indians or Rustlers. The value of each cow is based on weight so it is important not to go fast or the cows will lose weight - "Lost Pounds Lost Money". Young men eager for a days pay would join on as wranglers to drive the herd. They lived on the trail, sleeping and eating with the herd, hence the name "Cowboys".

Bring the family together for an unforgettable adventure and memories to last a lifetime.
